There are no rules when it comes to practicing meditation. If you have never done it before, set your mind to it and you will find yourself gradually progressing with time. Focus on the things around you. Listen to the sound that you hear and the things that you smell. Try to invoke your senses and pull yourself inward.

You can judge whether this is starting to pay off or not by your level of empathy and deeper connections with other people in your life. Many people who begin to slip into deeper meditative states find that they are more in tune with their loved ones and the world in general.
